QIC Global – the parent company of Lloyd’s carrier Antares and Bermuda-based Qatar Re – has confirmed the appointed of Mike van der Straaten as CEO of QIC Global (International). van der Straaten – who was most recently CEO of Qatar Re – will sit above and manage both carriers in his new role.

Commenting on the appointment, Talwar said: “Qatar Re and Antares are both poised for long-term growth, with an established operational platform in QIC Global and the firm financial backing of QIC Group.

“Mike has overseen the transformation of Qatar Re into a global multi-line reinsurer with a sustainable, profitable portfolio of business and we are very pleased he will be leading QIC Global into the next phase of its expansion.”

van der Straaten took over at Qatar Re from long serving CEO Gunther Saacke early last year and has previously held a series of senior roles at Canopius Group, Chubb and QIC Europe.

He first joined the Lloyd’s market in 1984 and has since specialised in property treaty and other specialty lines.

van der straaten added: “Antares and Qatar Re are both fantastic underwriting platforms, with a diverse range of income streams, a wealth of talent and established reputations at Lloyd’s and internationally. With market conditions improving markedly, I look forward to working with Joe and Sunil to grow the business further.”

In its 2019 results, QIC reported a FY combined ratio of 103.3 percent, which the carrier said was driven by reserve strengthening in its international business, which houses both Antares and Qatar Re, as well as UK motor insurer/ MGA Markerstudy Group.
